on past regattas, move on...
What I mean is that if you go to one of those big organised weeks and you have an out-of-this-world week, then just never damn well do it again.
Many said that Cork week 1992 or 1994 were the best, they bussed the women in. However 1996 was the best weather anyway, with wind most days and temperatures enough to positvely melt the local beamish drinkers into a black and white puddle of fat on the pavements of Crosshaven.
I went back in 98 and it wasn't a patch on 1996.
Some events in handicap are painful to return to, especially if it distance races or sailed in the same conditions. Take a Tarbert in some 5 knot poking palace: crap in the light dreary days and worse in the heavy on HC.
One Design is about the sport more so, and thus national champs or a well organised annual event can be on the calendar. Some local turn out events, like the Færder seilas or Round Askøy in norway, or round-the-island in the solent, Largs weekend are just like popping out for a jog and having a pint at the local later on.
But those bigger events, or those further afield, or those like the Fastnet, field -a- further: if you have a good one, okay go again, but if you have a week stolen from heaven, let it rest. Don't go again, you will never have it so good. Bathe instead, the memory in glorious sunshine through rose tinted glasses.
